Increasing comment and referral spam irritates users and affects website statistics

The principle is simple: blogging software might publish users comments including a link to the blog without editors confirmation or build referrers hitlists with the referrers as links. Anyone, who is able to write a robot can use this, to produce thousands of links to his site and would gain an improved PageRank and a free advertizing campaign.

As it seems, the spam robots are already running productive...

Website statistics software developers, blogging software developers and bloggers shall be aware of such spam.

Publishing links automatically makes a site rather vulnerable to automated spam. Spammers can figure out, which blogging software will built automatic referral linklists or allow posting of links without editors interaction. To find pages using this software and teach a robot to spam them by requesting pages with referrer set to the desired page or posting a comment is just a piece of cake.
