Frost & Sullivan: In 2008 The European Hosted VoIP Market will reach a billion Euro As usual with Frost & Sullivan, the table of contents is available for free - see the link provided. The price of the detailed report is 4000 USD.
Frost & Sullivan Press Release:
Hosted Internet protocol (IP) telephony services could well be the next big thing in telecommunications. Currently in its growth phase, this market is witnessing substantial growth as the outsourcing of telecom infrastructure and services increases. Adoption of these services is already rising among both legacy and next-generation carriers in most European countries.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.it.frost.com) reveals that this market – segmented in the research into Centrex IP, IP Centrex, hosted IP private branch exchange (IP PBX), and Integrated Access – generated revenues of EUR 45.80 million in 2003 and is expected to exhibit phenomenal growth at a compound annual growth rate of 93.2 per cent to reach a staggering EUR 1.23 billion in 2008.
"Adoption of open standards, efficient network management and service reliability are the cornerstones for market growth," remarks Frost & Sullivan Telecom Analyst Shomik Banerjee. "Hosted IP telephony offers enterprise access to converged telephony infrastructure at a lower cost, with the technology risk borne by the service provider."
Increasing awareness of the value proposition of hosted IP telephony, lower capital expenditure (CAPEX) and total cost of ownership and the potential to offer a one-stop bundled solution are also strong driving forces.
Currently, small and medium enterprises (SME) have expressed the keenest interest in these services. As hosted IP telephony services mature, however, large enterprises are expected to outpace the SME segment in their demand for these services.
The SME segment is likely to adopt IP Centrex services for their cost advantage. Lower cost, a fully outsourced model and bundled offerings suit the needs of small businesses that do not have in-house expertise and face CAPEX restraints.
The medium and large enterprise (MLE) segment, on the other hand, is likely to adopt hosted IP PBX solutions due to their non partition ability. Hosted IP PBX service providers are expected to compete with customer premise equipment (CPE) providers in this space and eventually emerge as a competitive offering to the latter.
The customer base for Centrex IP services is likely to be restricted to traditional Centrex users, and ultimately, these services are expected to be phased out with the maturity of alternate hosted IP services.
"Of the four market segments, IP Centrex promises to evolve as the most popular service mainly due to feature parity with CPE solutions at a lower cost," notes Mr. Banerjee. "These services are expected to see a surge in growth from 2004 onward and reach EUR 0.689 billion in 2008, accounting for 56 per cent of the total market and 12.8 percent of total shipments in Europe."
Despite the promising market outlook, hosted IP telephony services face a number of challenges from various angles – technical, business, marketing and distribution. Hosted IP telephony has to match the feature set of CPE in order to emerge as a truly competitive offering. From the business aspect, vendors need to consider price bundling and a reworking of the business/revenue model.
Marketing challenges include ramping up awareness and education as well as building strong brand recognition. Building good distribution channels is also essential for effective delivery of services.
The United Kingdom, Spain and Italy are emerging as early adopters of the technology. Next-generation carriers and new service providers have designed compelling value propositions in these markets.
The United Kingdom and the Netherlands have shown strong interest in IP Centrex and hosted PBX solutions. Many large installations have already expressed their eagerness to test hosted IP telephony solutions. Spain and Italy have also demonstrated an inclination toward IP Centrex as well as Integrated Access solutions.
Adoption in Germany and France is picking up with the incumbent carriers marketing hosted solutions. Central and Eastern Europe is a potentially big market for these solutions with both incumbents and international participants already vying to capture market share in this region.
