Spirent Communications Automates Voice Over Ip (Voip) Service Testing New Software Module Added to SmartSight VoIP Diagnostics Portfolio
Spirent Communications announced a new VoIP diagnostic software module that helps wireline, wireless, and cable companies better detect and resolve problems with commercially deployed IP and Ethernet services. The Spirent SmartSight VoIP Diagnostic Assistant will be the latest addition to the company’s SmartSight integrated portfolio of VoIP diagnostic software and hardware. Spirent’s SmartSight portfolio is on display at booth # 1100 at Broadband World Forum.
The software module, part of Spirent’s centralized VoIP diagnostic solution, will automate complex analysis of VoIP service problems such as dropped packets, jitter, latency and other issues that impede performance. According to OSS Observer, an industry analyst firm, centralized diagnostic systems are critical to the cost-effective and successful growth of VoIP services. “These centralized diagnostic systems provide valuable VoIP service measurement data and testing capabilities, eliminate expensive truck rolls and improve overall quality assurance,” said Patrick Kelly, partner, OSS Observer.
“For VoIP services to continue to grow in Europe and worldwide, providers need tools that increase visibility and diagnostic capabilities in the network, and which support emerging VoIP applications,” said Jim Schleckser, president of Spirent Communications’ Service Assurance-Broadband group. “Our centralized and automated diagnostics solution will significantly accelerate VoIP service troubleshooting and performance measurement.”
Last June, Spirent announced its SmartSight portfolio. The integrated solution will enable VoIP service providers to identify performance levels and issues from the customer premise to the network and operational support levels. In addition to the SmartSight VoIP Diagnostic Assistant, the Spirent SmartSight portfolio includes:
- Spirent SmartSight Operational Support System (OSS)—deployed at the network operation centers, technicians use the OSS to quickly troubleshoot and resolve complex IP service issues by testing VoIP traffic for such quality of service (QoS) measurements as jitter, loss, latency and utilization.
- Spirent SmartSight Quality of Service Scope—a network appliance deployed at customer locations, central offices and serving exchanges used to help provisioning VoIP services and to emulate VoIP traffic for troubleshooting and quality assurance.
- Spirent SmartSight Network Interface Device—a small and inexpensive device installed at customer premise locations to remotely monitor and test VoIP traffic and report on call set-up and tear down times, call duration and end points as well as performance statistics such as throughput, latency, packet loss and utilization.
- Spirent SmartSight Broadband Remote Test Unit—A network appliance compatible with the next-generation of multiplexers being deployed at the metro edge of a large communication networks. The Unit is used to test high-speed data services such as Ethernet, IP, Frame Relay, and ATM to accelerate provisioning and troubleshooting.
