Jafit Network Analysis Nitro Freeware Review

Network Analysis Nitro (NAN) from Finland uses PCap (WinPCap - possibly libpcap on Unix/Linux) to gather data and Jpcap functions to process and display the data.

Network Analysis Nitro is delivered as a zip archive without an installer. After unpacking the archive and installing WinPCap with the included WinPCap installer - and possibly the java Runtime environment, if you don't have it already, NAN can be just executed without any installation.

NAN will directly start to show what it captured. The display is devided in 3 parts - top left a tree view for interfaces and host addresses which might be used to apply filters for capturing, right a graphic of usage separated for TCP, UDP and ICMP over time and downside a table with captured data, where headers are sorted into tables columns. The table might be sorted by column. Catured data is written completely as a dump into a newly created directory dump.

The strength of Network Analysis Nitro is it's simplicity, nothing to configure, no stupid installation routine, just execute NAN and see what you get. What might be rather helpful is also the dump written into the directory, it might be accessed with a hex editor to grab out traffic details like forgotten usernames and passwords or to see wat information exactly was exchanged with a certain server.

The simplicity has it's price, though. It's not possible to define filters which traffic to capture, not possible to change information displayed, especially the light green on gray TCP line and the white grid and axis text of the graphics can be hard to see. Network Analysis Nitro stores 10000 packets in memory, the whole program including the java process will use approximately 30 MB of RAM. Really unpleasant is, that NAN uses lot's of CPU power - capturing a transfer even with just 10 MBit speed of a larger file in intranet has used an 1300 MHz CPU up to 100% as long as the file transfer went on and made the transfer rate go down to about 5 MBit due to not available CPU. The bad news is, that filters can't configured in a way, that intranet traffic is excluded from capture.

That the traffic is stored to disk, has also unpleasant side effects: when having lot's of data transfer, you might easily run out of disk space, when you have fast data transfers in intranet, you might also hit the disk io performance limit of your computer.

Anyway - all in all the Network Analysis Nitro is already an easy to use and useful networking tool and we are tensioned to see how Tommi Laukkanen will enhance it in the future.

It's strength is that it's free and easy enough to be used by computer beginners.
