Asante Adds Guaranteed Qos For Voice Over Ip - Prices for 16 Port 10/100/1000 Gigabit Layer 3 Switches Start at $3225.00
San Jose, California, September 14, 2004—Asante Technologies, Inc. today announced updates for its IntraCore® 35516 Layer 3 Gigabit switches. The IC35516 switch’s Guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS) allocates bandwidth for high-priority traffic, such as Voice over IP (VoIP). New routing protocol support includes Virtual Redundant Routing Protocol (VRRP) and Q-in-Q VLAN Tunneling.
“The IC35516 switch has provided a very high-quality, full-featured routing device without the huge price tag of the competitors,” commented David Groce, Network Server Analyst/Coordinator at North Kitsap School District (Poulsbo, WA). “What was appealing to us was the ability to route at 100 MB speeds without requiring a traditional router. The install has gone very well; we have 13 sites that are using these switches and I had to spend very little time configuring them.
“The ability to look at VLAN setups and interface statistics while in configuration mode was very useful,” Groce continued. “We bought these units with the intention of sending VoIP traffic over them in the next year or so, and I have no doubt they will do the job as well or better than the competition.”
Advanced Features Enable Administrators to Upgrade Network Performance
The IntraCore 35516 family is Asante’s flagship Layer 3 Gigabit switch series. By understanding network protocols and addresses, the IC35516 limits broadcast domains to improve network efficiency. It easily bridges and routes traffic between subnets and virtual LANs. Key features include:
* Guaranteed QoS. By allocating bandwidth for high-priority services, network bandwidth can be voice, video, or other traffic guaranteed with IP multicasting and Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP). For example, a network manager could allocate 12 Mbps of guaranteed bandwidth across a WAN link for VoIP traffic (no matter what the load on that link, the VoIP traffic will get 12 Mbps of bandwidth, guaranteed).
* Enforced Enterprise-Class Routing. The IC35516 offers robust routing capabilities, including support for Routing Information Protocol (RIP) v1/2, Open Shortest Path First (OSPF), and Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) v4. The switch also features an enterprise-class multicast routing implementation with support for Distance Vector Multicast Routing Protocol (DVMRP), Protocol-Independent Multicast (PIM) Sparse and Dense Modes, IGMP v1/2/3, Source Specific Multicasting (SSM), and Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP).
* VRRP. The Virtual Redundant Routing Protocol allows network managers to deploy IC35516s redundantly for 100 percent Layer 3 switch redundancy. The switch’s VRRP implementation also supports load-balancing so that traffic can be balanced across two to four IC35516s.
* Q-in-Q VLAN Tunneling. This ISP-specific feature allows ISPs to tunnel “customer 802.1q tagged traffic” across the ISP network without worrying about VLAN ID conflict. This allows the ISP to offer point-to-point Ethernet service across the city, across the country, or around the world.
* Rate Limiting Per Port. This ISP-specific feature allows ISPs to provide a Gigabit Ethernet link (1000T, 1000SX, or 1000LX) to a customer and then provision service in 1 Mbps increments with a service-level agreement (SLA).
* Other New Features. 802.1w rapid spanning tree, Per VLAN Spanning Tree (PVST), and Secure Shell (SSH).
Flexible Network Design
Users can choose from two configurations. The IC35516-T is ideal for growing networks. On four ports, this unit can switch and route between any combination of long-distance fiber backbones (using optional GBIC modules) or workgroups connected through 10/100/1000BaseT copper cables. With the powerful all-Gigabit IC35516-G, users can fill up to 16 GBIC garages with fiber modules. Four ports can also handle 10/100/1000BaseT copper.
