Philadelphia Planning WiFi in Street Lamps

After New York - the Big Wireless Apple - also Philadelphia is planning to WiFi enable the street lamps in the city.

It's estimated that it will cost initially just about US$10m to enable the whole 345 sq km town and has just follow up costs of about US$1.5m annually for maintainance.

Whether the service will be offered for free like in Cleveland or at a moderate charge like in Chaska, Minnesota is not defined yet. And as we all know public financials, it might be also possible, that the city will sell the possibility to offer WiFi to ISPs like New York is going to do.

With Philadelphia being another huge City planning to offer WiFi in street lamps, it's looking more and more like data transfer or communication at all will become in future public communal service, just like street lamps, garbage collecting, electricity or gas.

What will the Telcos do, if this trend becomes reality?
